When aqueous solution of borax is acidified with hydrochloric acid, a white crystalline solid is formed which is soapy to touch. Is this solid acidic or basic in nature ? Explain.
Option A
Option B
Option C
Option D
Solution
An aqueous solution of borax is acidified with $\mathrm{HCl}$ to give boric acid.
$\mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{~B}_{4} \mathrm{O}_{7}+2 \mathrm{HCl}+5 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{NaCl}+4 \mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{BO}_{3}$
Boric acid is a weak monobasic acid. It is not a protonic acid but acts as a Lewis acid by accepting electrons from a hydroxyl ion :
$\mathrm{B}(\mathrm{OH})_{3}+2 \mathrm{HOH} \rightarrow\left[\mathrm{B}(\mathrm{OH})_{4}\right]^{-}+\mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{O}^{+}$
